Inspiration

Overview

Limited to just 18 extraordinary examples, this is the first fruit of Hautlence’s daring collaboration with football’s former enfant terrible, Eric Cantona – a man whose self-reinvention as enigmatic philosopher-cum-art collector makes him the perfect muse for a watch brand founded on non-conformist adventurism.

The second of Hautlence’s mind-blowing “Concept d’Exception” horological experiments, the VORTEX is much more than simply a wristwatch; it is a literal showcase of the brand’s extraordinary talents, its regulating organ tumbling 360º every 6 hours within a light-drenched geometric structure, normally glazed by six sapphire-crystal facets. However, thanks to the creativity of Cantona, and the expert adaptability of Hautlence’s watchmakers, the PVD-coated titanium case is now extensively segmented to house 19 primary-coloured sapphire windows – a Mondrian painting in watch form (if you can even call this tour de force of a creation a “watch” per se...)

Inspiration

Inspired by a stained-glass window, as well as post-modern architecture and deconstructivism, the case's construction reveals the heart of the timepiece in its mysterious beauty. "Time and death are intimately linked. The VORTEX PRIMARY reflects life and death, imprisonment and freedom, metamorphosis and colour," concludes Eric Cantona.

In The Know

“No, it will not be for everyone, and it probably is not a versatile "every-occasion" watch, but I cannot picture this but putting a smile on the face of the wearer.” aBlogtoWatch

“Combines Cantona’s strong passion for art with Hautlence’s unique reinterpretation of time, and what is born is a most unique timepiece, that is sculptured like a mechanical piece of art.” Haute Time

“One sometimes wonders if Hautlence will run out of ideas dreaming up new ways to present time on a dial. It conceivably might, one day. Even the sun will burn out in due time. But not this year. Think stained glass vitrine for a piece of kinetic sculpture.” Revolution
