Baselworld 2018: Top Of The Indie World Part-I
Every year at the end of March we travel to the beautiful city of Basel to discover horological gems. Filled with the greatest excitement we enter the famed Messeplatz. Yet again, this year we were thrilled. Never disappointed. Always delighted by our exploration. Baselworld 2018 has certainly shown a great success for the independents’ world.
Our visit to Baselworld 2018
Without the luxury of visiting all the exhibition halls for watches, we focused our tour on the independent village. Here is a selection of 7 of our favourite 2018 Baselworld discoveries.
Schwarz-Etienne Edition I “Ode To Spring”
First on our list is the Ode To Spring from the surreal Schwarz-Etienne. This collection counts 3 meticulously hand-painted watches and pays tribute to Les Métiers D’art. As its name may suggest, each of them is a homage to spring and a little insect adorned their dials. Such as for the eponymous song of Joachim Raff, this exquisite watch collection boasts incredible delicacy and elegance rarely seen on a men’s watch.
Our pick, the first timepiece of the collection, is adorned with subtle retrograde seconds and minutes’ displays made of tiger’s eye. It is an interesting choice, taking into consideration that tiger’s eye as a fine gemstone originally conveys courage, self-confidence and strength to its owner. The one who will then be ready to tackle the everyday life as a modern hero. In addition, the mechanism incorporated in the Ode To Spring is the classical in-house Tourbillon Petite Seconde Rétrograde (PSR) and its irreversible TSE 122.00 movement with 72 hours power reserve. Its tourbillon is featured at 1 o’clock, its micro-rotor at 9 o’clock and small second retrograde at 11 o’clock.
All things considered, the Ode To Spring collection is one of a kind, exclusive and bold you will not see from mainstream brands.
ArtyA Mother of Pearl Tourbillon and Son of Earth Butterfly Set
Next up, we came across ArtyA‘s Mother of Pearl Tourbillon and Son of Earth Butterfly Set. Featured in the GMT magazine for its creativity, the two unique watches are hand-engraved in hours-long process of fine craftsmanship. The Son of Earth Butterfly Set I is adorned with a crown of 147 diamonds, as well as most surprisingly, real butterfly wings on its dial. Both models boast an Artya in-house modified movement, respectively the A48 automatic movement and tourbillon movement. In the wake of ArtyA’s creative spirit, the Mother of Pearl Tourbillon exhibits Neo-Renaissance ornamental by the master-engraver Bram Ramon. In the heart is an exclusive ArtyA flying tourbillon with manual winding and 100 hours power reserve.
Czapek Quai des Bergues Guilloché Havana Brown
Our great Czapek has unveiled shortly prior to Baselworld its new Quai Des Bergues Guilloché Ricochet collection. Starting with a Green Forest, an Aqua Blue, a Sea Salt Grey, a Rhubarb Red version, and finally a Baselworld exclusive Havana Brown version. In the wake of the previous Quai Des Bergues collection, its bombé dial and two subdial signature provide this elegant watch with the capacity to be dressed many ways. Hence, this sophisticated timepiece shines in a cocktail date in town as well as in the office on a daily basis.
Fabergé Lady Compliqué Peacock Black and Pink Gold
Off the show, we had the great surprise to discover a new version of the award-winning lady compliqué peacock. On this masterpiece from the luxury house Fabergé, hours can be read against the crown and anticlockwise. Also, in the same fashion as its older sisters, the minutes are displayed by the peacock’s tail which unwinds through a period of 60 minutes. In essence, the new version only differs in its materials, equally exquisite, a black dial version in a rose-gold case.
Amongst other indies, we would like to deliver a special mention of the incredible partnership between MB&F and L’épée 1839. Once again, the two famous brands have combined their creativity and savoir-faire to develop an incredible time machine, the Fifth Element. This thermometer, barometer, and hygrometer is a playful adaption of a classic weather station. Furthermore, its look and curves are inspired by science-fiction as very well described by the brands, “each of the four Elements is modelled after the quintessential 1950-60s UFO”. Moreover, ” The mothership is piloted by Ross, [their] resident Alien – powered by his own manually-wound movement”. Always with a great sense of humour, the two brands, announced its landing on our planet at Baselworld 2018.
Finally, not to forget the Urwerk UR-105 Bronze created in partnership with Revolution Watches and Jacob&Co Twin Turbo Furious which join our picks of this incredible 2018 Baselworld tour.
We would like to congratulate our partners for their endless innovative spirits and Baselworld 2018 success. In essence, we would like to thank all of them as well as our clients, and friends who, together, make what we do an incredible adventure.
