Founded in 1770 outside Geneva by the French philosopher Voltaire, Manufacture Royale produced clocks and objet d’art for royalty and European elites. The company disappeared alongside the French Enlightenment writer, only to be revived in 2010 by cousins and watch industry veterans, Alexis and David Gouten.
With an ambition to cultivate Voltaire’s free spirit, Manufacture Royale’s steampunk-inspired horological wonders draw on the firm’s unique literary heritage, including references to the philosopher’s works and those of his rivals. The brand specialises in highly complicated manufacture movements, including double tourbillons and skeletonized minute repeaters, along with a focus on bold and avant-garde case design. Today, they continue to be a leading light in contemporary horology.
“With the Age of Enlightenment in its veins, Manufacture Royale is bound by honor to create timepieces of exceptional savoir-faire, with a nonconformist attitude.” Forbes
“With a Manufacture Royale, rest assured that you’ll be wearing a one-of-a-kind, akin to strapping a Bugatti to your wrist.” TechCrunch
“The brand is working in the spirit of Voltaire to produce unique and engaging timepieces that Voltaire, or even Mad Max, would be proud to wear.” Hodinkee
